5-day Enhanced Setting Out Skills

Description

The Enhanced Setting Out Skills course is a comprehensive five-day programme designed to advance the practical and technical capabilities of engineers working within the civil engineering and construction sectors. The course consolidates and extends the knowledge gained in the 5-day Setting Out For Construction course which comprises two CITB Assured Training Standards, Levelling for Construction and Total Station for Construction. The course supports participants to operate confidently with GNSS, robotic total stations, and digital survey data systems used across modern construction projects.

This programme has been structured to align with recognised industry standards and working practices, including those reflected within CITB short-duration training standards for surveying and setting out. It provides essential skills development for engineers engaged in layout, dimensional control, and verification tasks on site.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the course, delegates will be able to demonstrate competence across the following areas of setting out practice.

GNSS and Robotic Total Station Skills:

  • Use GNSS to locate position in static and RTK modes
  • Apply atmospheric corrections to a total station
  • Upload setting out data to the controller (GNSS or robotic total station)
  • Set out using coordinates and offsets
  • Set out arcs
  • Set out in relation to grid lines
  • Carry out a survey using points, lines and feature codes

Digital Data Skills:

  • Use different data formats to output as-built surveys data
  • Process and present as-built survey data
  • Apply least squares adjustment to survey data for construction site control points

Drawing Skills:

  • Use drawings and data formats to support setting out

Levelling Skills:

  • Transfer levels using a digital level for setting up primary control points for a construction site
  • Work with a laser level correctly for setting out groundworks and earthworks

Prerequisites

Learners are required to have an understanding of;

- Geometry and coordinate systems

- Establishing primary control points via traverse

- Understanding of the fundamentals of levelling and setting out by tape
